The Black Phone takes place in the 1970s and features Ethan Hawke as a serial kidnapper and murderer who is known as The Grabber. The film also features Mason Thames in his first-ever film role, portraying the his protagonist Finney Shaw. He is kidnapped by the Grabber and has to locate a way out of the Grabber’s clutches. In addition to directingthe film, Derrickson composed the screenplay along with his long-time partner C. Robert Cargill. It is based off an original short story composed by Joe Hill.

“Joe Hill pitched me a wonderful idea for a sequel to Black Phonethat, if this movie does well, I’m gonna do it. He’s got a great idea, I really liked it,” Derrickson said to ComicBook.com in the spring of this year. “Joe’s very protective and personal about his material, but he came to me with the idea and I was like, ‘That’s how you do a sequel to Black Phone. That’s terrific.'”
